Una Voce Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Joins With Priest Training Workshop Popular effort supports diocesan clergy wishing to learn to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Distribution - April 16, 2007 ANN ARBOR, MI – On the birthday of Pope Benedict XVI, Una Voce Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti announces that it will sponsor any interested local Catholic priest to attend one of the Traditional Latin Mass programs offered at Our Lady of Guadalupe seminary in Denton, NE, this June. Una Voce America (UVA) has arranged each of the one-week sessions in coordination with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP). The FSSP will be responsible for curriculum and instruction, while UVA will assume primary responsibility for funding and promoting the program. Una Voce Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti will fund the program for any diocesan clergy from this region. Priests who attend will learn the language and liturgical actions ("rubrics) of the Traditional Latin Mass, and how those rubrics reflect the Holy Scripture and the Catholic Faith. All priests who attend the week-long intensive training sessions will gain full proficiency in celebrating the Mass and will have any questions answered. Since the program was originally announced on March 11, more than half of the spots have been snatched up by priests from Denver, Arlington, NYC, Tennessee and New Jersey, among others. The Traditional Latin Mass originated before the fall of Rome. The rubrics are based on Holy Scripture and the worship of God and slowly developed over many succeeding centuries. Following the will of the 16th century Ecumenical Council of Trent (1545-1563), Pope Pius V permitted every priest in the Roman Catholic Church to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass (and made it obligatory for some priests and dioceses). For this reason, the Traditional Latin Mass is sometimes called the "Tridentine" Mass. ("Tridentine" means "of or related to Trent"). Una Voce (a Latin phrase meaning "with one voice") is an international lay association dedicated to the preservation of the Traditional Latin Mass. Pope John Paul II recognized that those Catholics who wish to attend Mass in Latin according to the ancient rite should be permitted to do so, and Una Voce works within Church structures to increase its availability. The Diocese of Lansing offers two such Masses every Sunday – one in Flint and one in Jackson. The Dioceses of Detroit and London, Ontario, offer the Mass as well. The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti chapter of Una Voce is composed of lay faithful who live in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti and worship at local parishes or at the nearby Traditional Latin Masses. To receive more information or to make a reservation, interested priests should contact Fr. Goodwin at (402) 797-7700 or email: seminary@fsspolgs.org or write to: Attn: Mass Workshops, O.L.G.
